SWALlight™
What is a backlit canvas?
Illuminated stretched canvases transform your walls and ceilings into a massive light source.
SWALlight™ backlit canvases are translucent canvases mounted on a wall or ceiling, with an LED system built into the back. Light passes through the canvas and diffuses softly and evenly, without any shadows, transforming a flat surface into a very large light source.
This type of solution allows you to create a uniquely designed atmosphere. In a living room, bedroom, or entryway, it provides functional lighting and enhances the space. In offices or retail settings, it gives the space a stunning look. The “wow” effect for visitors is guaranteed !
The advantage of illuminated stretch fabrics over other lighting solutions lies in their very large surface area. It is possible to design a 50m² backlit stretch ceiling without seams, whereas this is not possible with other materials. Our fabrics come in widths (see our glossary) of up to 5 meters. This allows for the creation of a very large-format illuminated panel in a single piece, without seams or joints. This feature is highly valued for design or contemporary projects.

The benefits of customizable lighting.
Flexible lighting that adapts to your preferences and needs, whether mounted on the wall or ceiling.
SWALlight™ backlit panels provide decorative or functional lighting that enhances your spaces while providing the light needed for everyday life. Their even light distribution eliminates shadows and creates a soft, comfortable atmosphere, suitable for both living spaces and professional environments.
Our large illuminated surfaces can be customized in terms of color temperature, whether you prefer warm white (3000K), neutral white (4000K), or cool white (6000K) and brightness. You can choose between fixed lighting or dimmable lighting, which adapts to different moods and times of day.
Lighting control is simple and flexible. It can be managed via a switch, a remote control, a dimmer, or a DALI console, enabling precise control. LED technology ensures lower energy consumption and long-lasting performance, providing consistent, high-quality lighting over the long term.
Installing a SWALlight™ backlit screen combines technical expertise with tailored solutions to ensure optimal results. The screen is stretched over a frame made of tension profiles mounted on the wall or ceiling, behind which the LED system is positioned.
To preserve the quality of the light and keep the screen clean over time, a dust-proof screen is placed between the screen and the LEDs. This is essentially a double-layered stretch ceiling. This screen prevents dust from settling on the screen, thereby preventing any deterioration in the lighting quality.
There are two main types of lighting used for backlighting: backlighting and side lighting. Backlighting involves placing LEDs directly at the back, behind the canvas, to produce a soft, diffused light that illuminates the entire surface evenly. This type of lighting is perfect for creating a soft, even ambiance.
Tangential lighting, on the other hand, uses LEDs positioned more to the side, often along the edges, to highlight contours or create more graphic and dynamic lighting effects. This type of lighting adds depth and can accentuate volumes, providing an additional aesthetic dimension to the backlit surface. The choice between backlighting or tangential lighting depends on the desired effect and the project, and SWAL™ works with each client to select the most suitable solution.

Options for every project.
Classic, printed, acoustic, or framed, each solution meets a specific need.
The backlit fabric can be installed on walls or ceilings to create large, luminous areas that enhance the space. It can also be used in the form of backlit frames, which are perfect for creating custom light panels or experimenting with specific formats to add visual interest to the space.
High-definition printing adds a whole new dimension: light reveals the original, custom design, whether it’s a graphic pattern, an image, or a decorative element. The benefit is twofold: it serves as both decor and visual communication on a single medium. Printed fabric is fairly easy to replace, making it possible to update a space (seasonal collection, temporary campaign, new layout).
SWALlight™ is available in an acoustic version, combining light and sound absorption to create comfortable and visually distinctive spaces. Behind the fabric, an absorbent material reduces reverberation while maintaining uniform lighting. It is an ideal choice for offices, restaurants, or lobbies where acoustic comfort is just as important as aesthetics.

The price of a SWALlight™ backlit fabric panel varies depending on several factors : dimensions, LED brightness (fixed or dimmable), control type (dimmer, remote control, DALI), and the thickness of the plenum required for optimal light diffusion. Sub-structures and LED systems are not included in the base price, as they depend on numerous technical choices specific to each project.
The cost for supplying and installing the profiles, fabric, and protective cover ranges from €75 to €110 per square meter. This price may vary if options such as custom printing or an acoustic version are added. Each installation is unique, and a detailed quote is provided to ensure the best possible result. In addition, there is the cost of supplying and installing the LED strips. It is very difficult to estimate a price because the number of LEDs varies significantly from one project to another.
Frequently Asked Questions
The light diffusion rate varies depending on the type of fabric used, as not all fabrics have the same ability to transmit light. It also depends on the lighting chosen and the height of the plenum—that is, the space between the LEDs and the fabric. A well-designed setup, combining the right fabric with a high-performance LED system, ensures even light diffusion without any shadowed areas, resulting in high-quality lighting.
In general, it is recommended to leave a space of 10 to 15 cm between the canvas and the LEDs to ensure even light distribution. However, this distance may vary depending on the power and type of LEDs used, as well as on the constraints of the location. The choice of LEDs is essential to avoid visible light spots or shadowed areas. It is therefore best to opt for high-quality LEDs from a reliable supplier. Neon lights or similar systems are not recommended, as they do not provide uniform, soft lighting.
Yes, SWALlight™ backlit fabrics can be integrated into a home automation system, provided that the lighting control system (dimmer, remote control, DALI console, etc.) is compatible. This allows you to control the lighting according to different scenarios, adjust the intensity or temperature as needed, and create customized lighting atmospheres. Professional assistance is recommended to ensure compatibility and optimal configuration.
